Rare Disease Day 2013 - Info & G!veaways

On this day, millions of patients and their families will share their stories to focus a spotlight on rare diseases as an important global public health concern.

“There are nearly 30 million Americans—and millions more around the world—affected by rare diseases,” said Peter L. Saltonstall, president and CEO of NORD.  “Everyone knows someone with a rare disease.  But, while many of these diseases are serious and lifelong, most have no treatment and many are not even being studied by researchers.  This leaves patients and families without hope for a better future.”

On Rare Disease Day, people with rare diseases around the world promote awareness of the challenges of living with a rare disease.  The global theme for 2013 is “Rare Disorders Without Borders.”

World Rare Disease Day was launched in Europe in 2008 and last year was observed in more than 60 nations.  It is always observed on the last day of February.  On that day, patients and patient organizations will post stories, videos and blogs online and host events to raise awareness of these diseases, which are often called “orphans”.

This year, the observance has special significance in the U.S. because 1983 is also the 30th anniversary of the Orphan Drug Act, which provides incentives to encourage companies to develop treatments for rare diseases, and of NORD, which was established by patient advocates in 1983.

“More than half of the people who have rare diseases are children,” Saltonstall said.  “Challenges faced by patients and their families include delayed diagnosis, few treatment options, and difficulty finding medical experts.  Many rare diseases have no approved treatment.  Insurance may not cover treatments that aren’t approved.  Also, treatments for rare diseases tend to be more expensive than those for common diseases.”

In 1983, the Orphan Drug Act was passed by Congress to create financial incentives for companies to develop treatments for rare diseases.  Since then, more than 400 orphan drugs and biologics have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).  It is estimated that approximately 15 million Americans benefit from these products, but that still leaves millions more with diseases for which there is no approved treatment.

Chloe Carstairs – What Makes the Perfect Book Blog?

What makes the perfect book blog?

by Chloe Carstairs

Use your blog to promote your book – and vice versa – by finding the right hooks.

If you’ve written a book, by now you know that “The End” is only the beginning. You now have to be a brilliant blogger, not to mention a Facebook aficionada and a Twitter buff, to let the world know your book even exists. Daunting, right? Well, the blogging part doesn’t have to be. In fact you’ve already done the hardest part – the writing the book part. And if you’ve done that properly, you’re well on your way to building a successful blog around it. Forget scratching your head for content.  (That’s a word bloggers toss around a lot, by the way, “content”. Sounds very official.) You’re just 3 steps away from having all the ideas you need to generate content for several posts a week. Let’s get started.

Step 1: List your book’s hooks:

What are some cool things about your book’s main character, setting, time period or theme that you used to hook your reader. For my book, Murder on the First Day of Christmas, my hooks would include: hilarious main character, decorating , mother-daughter relationships, Christmas, amateur detectives, humor, dating disasters, mystery, Birmingham. Don’t forget themes too. My friend wrote a book about a girl who is disfigured in a fire, so her hooks might include alienation, leaps-of-faith and self-discovery. Oh, and since you’re a writer, you get two freebies. “Writing craft” is automatically one of your hooks. “Author” is another. If you’ve already made a name for yourself or lead an interesting life, you should definitely be the subject of your own blog, but knowing your hooks can still be helpful.

Step 2: Choose the hooks with the biggest crooks

By that I mean, look over your list and decide which of those hooks can generate the most content. On my list, decorators, mother-daughter relationships and mystery immediately jump out. There are entire channels, magazines and blogs dedicated to decorating but, small confession here, my author, Billie Thomas, isn’t an expert. She’s also pretty shy, so I’m going to replace decorator with hilarious main character. Billie turned this blog over to me, figuring that I’d be more fun. (I love an author that knows her limitations.) Mysteries and being an amateur detective are definitely two more angles worth pursuing, since I’m starring in a mystery series. Finally, while mother-daughter relationships are rich with content possibilities, dating disasters are funnier. So my hooks with the biggest crooks are: hilarious main character, mystery/amateur detective and dating disasters. Note: While my blog will be mostly about these things, I’m not losing the other hooks just yet. Which brings me to…

Step 3: Blog with baited hooks

Ready to use your hooks to generate content? Good, because this is the fun part. As a ‘hilarious main character’, on my blog I can do interviews with other author’s characters and there have been a lot of them on chloegetsaclue.com. I can also blab Billie’s writing tips like they’re my own, write about decorating without being an expert and talk about my fictional mother-daughter relationship rather than Billie’s real one. Mystery is probably my biggest hook and I’m having fun creating mini mysteries or giving tips on being a savvy – not to mention stylish– amateur detective. Oh, and I’m dating, often with disastrous results, so I can easily dish the dirt on those. Notice how I haven’t abandoned my minor hooks, like decorating and mother-daughter relationships? I just use them as a fresh angle for my bigger hooks.

Now if you’re books aren’t a series, can this exercise still work for you? Sure. If you’re blogging as yourself, find hooks about your life, your expertise or your writing that you can blog about. Using your minor hooks to give a fresh take on your major ones will keep the content coming. It’s still your writing – both in your book and in your blog – that will win over readers.

Hope these tips help take some of the mystery out of creating a book blog. And, hey, speaking of mysteries, I hope you’ll check our mine, Murder on the First Day of Christmas. Here’s how:

About Murder on the First Day of Christmas

Finding a severed hand at a client’s house might throw lesser decorators off their games. But Chloe Carstairs and her mother, Amanda, won’t let a little thing like murder keep them from decking the halls. With a body under the partridge’s pear tree and a dead Santa in a sleigh, they have to crack the case before the killer strikes again – this time much too close to home.

Filled with laugh-out-loud humor, romance and a delightfully difficult mother-daughter relationship, this new series from Billie Thomas offers a fast-paced caper as these two southern ladies try to keep their very merry Christmas from turning into the Noel from hell.

Simon Jenner – 10 Tips for Becoming A Better Writer

10 Tips for becoming a better writer

by Simon Jenner

1)     Be observant all of the time, especially when out and about – great inspiration is just around a corner.

2)     Don’t try to write great literature unless you really are that good – there are great writers past and present who can write about anything and bring it to life with a vibrancy most of us can only dream of.  If you aren’t one of them write good plots with interesting characters.  They are just as much fun to read and you won’t die trying.

3)     Read as much as possible but never try to copy the style of your chosen material.  Always write from the heart and develop your own style.  Unless it flows from the heart it will never be as good as it can be.

4)     Write as often as you can – gaps in your writing timeline make you rusty.

5)     Contact other writers and stay in touch – enjoy communicating with your peers as it is a great learning opportunity.

6)     Don’t be put off by harsh criticism – many critics feel the need to offend and many don’t have a clue what the public want.

7)     Edit, edit, edit – nothing is as good as it can be on first draft.  Even your editor will expect you to have drastically trimmed your work before receiving it.  Even if you are great, you can’t afford to be lazy.

8)     There’s no such thing as writer’s block.  There are such things as procrastination, laziness, boredom, being in the wrong business and being in need of a short break.

9)     The public is diverse and you don’t have to appeal to everyone – don’t write about a subject because you feel it is what people want to read.  Write about subjects and people that inspire you and your inspiration will shine through in your writing.

10)Practise, practise, practise – with every page you write, you learn.  The more you learn, the better writer you will become.  My father always says ‘If it was easy, then everyone would do it.’

Trapped by George Bernstein

TrappedTrapped by George A. Bernstein
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

What did you like least? Nothing comes to mind. This was a well-crafted book that all of us at the book club enjoyed very much.

Was location important to the story? I feel the location was not important. The story could be placed in London or New York.

Was the time period important to the story? This book was wrote for current times. I honestly wonder how the author would of handled the story if it was wrote 10-20 years ago.

What alternative title would you choose for this book? No one could pick a better title. Trapped was perfect for this book.

Disclosure: I received a review copy of this book from the author.

George Bernstein – Practical Advice for Beginning Fiction Writers

Practical Advice for Beginning Fiction Writers

by George Bernstein

First, don’t do it, if that’s how you plan on making a living. Sure, we all hear about the fabulous successes of the J.K. Rowlings and John Greshams, but what you don’t hear is how long they struggled to even get published, and that people who make real money writing fiction are about .01% of all the writers out there.

Second, if you’re still intent on being a writer and getting published by a REAL publisher, you’d better have a thick skin and be able to take rejection…after rejection… after rejection. You may NEVER find an agent or publisher for your work. Louis L’Amore, probably America’s most prolific writer of Westerns, was reputedly rejected 350 times before getting his first story published.

So, unless you’re writing for the joy of it…that you really want to get that story down on paper, no matter what…then find some better use for your time.

But in the face of all that, you still want to write that novel, then here’s some advice.

First, pick up a couple of books on fiction writing. Donald Maass’ “Writing the Breakout Novel,” and Albert Zuckerman’s “Writing the Blockbuster Novel,” are two of a legion of titles available. Zuckerman’s book gives you a complete roadmap, from beginning to end. You can search Amazon or www.ABE.com (good, like-new used books, cheaper) or the library. While you’re at it, you can pick up Dave King’s “Self-Editing for Fiction Writers,” which you’ll need later. Read those first, to get you on the right track.

Now, select the story you want to write, think of where it’s going and the characters who are going to take it there…and how you want it to end. I write a brief outline, often chapter by chapter, and make up 4 x 6 cards for each major character. Those cards should show their physical appearance (eye color, hair, nose, height, build, distinguishing features, etc.), and who they are (personality), and a list of their various interests. The more complete you make these, the more your characters will take on real life dimensions. And if while fleshing out your story, you add something to the character, add it to their card. You don’t want a blue-eyed gal to have “emerald” eyes later. Believe me, it happens.

Time to begin writing. Everyone does this differently. Personally, I’ll write the entire story before I do much editing. I don’t worry about spelling, punctuation or grammar while I’m getting my story down. I try to get emotionally involved with my protagonist, and I let him (or her) take over the plot. Each of my four novels ended up substantially different from my original outline. Even the endings on a couple got changed. In collaboration with my editor at TAG, Dee Burks, I made substantial revisions to much of the end of TRAPPED, although I preserved the very ending.

The hard work comes when you’ve finished the first draft. My immediate task is correcting mechanical errors: spelling, punctuation, grammar and sentence construction. Then look at the story. Did you create tension? Donald Maass asks, “What’s the worst thing that can happen to your characters?” Then he asks, “What can be WORSE than that?” And finally, “Even WORSE than that?” If there’s no jeopardy…no anxiety…no one will bother reading it. Read the dialog out loud. Does it sound contrived or natural? Join a critique group where you can read some pages, and listen to other read theirs…and develop a sense of what sounds good. Good dialog requires few tags. Readers should usually know who is talking, but if you need a tag for clarity, keep it mostly to “he said; she said.”

Don’t think one edit or revision will do it, either. I removed a complete side plot from my original version of TRAPPED. It was exciting, but just didn’t add to that story. But it wasn’t a loss. I’m using it in one of my new Al Warner detective novel, so that manuscript starts out already half written.

In the end, writing the first novel will be a huge learning experience. Few authors get their first novel published. While in a sense, I’m bucking that trend, since TRAPPED is my first novel, I’ve written four, and TRAPPED is so rewritten from my first draft, it might as well be my 5th…or 6th. That’s what it takes to succeed.

Orangeberry Book of the Day – Genetically Modified Foods vs. Sustainability – Bruno McGrath

clip_image001
“We can’t solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.” – Albert Einstein
This ebook points out the surrounding issues of genetically modified fruit and vegetables that consumers are unaware of. While several parties defend the use of technology to create food, there seems to be little being done to increase awareness about this matter to the end consumer. It also points out alternative food sustainability options such as organic farming and land management.
This ebook will indicate that although some parties agree that genetically modified food items are cost effective and considered safe, its long-term results have not been adequately researched and the use of pesticides on these items are far higher than for other types farming or food products.

Marching With Caesar-Conquest of Gaul is a first-person narrative, written in the form of a memoir as dictated to a scribe of Titus Pullus, Legionary, Optio, First Spear Centurion of Caesar’s 6th and 10th Legion. The memoir is written three years after his retirement as Camp Prefect, when Titus is 61 years old.

Titus, along with his boyhood friend Vibius Domitius, joins the 10th Legion in the draft of 61 BC, when Gaius Julius Caesar is the governor of Spain. Titus and Vibius are assigned to a tent group, with seven other men who will become their closest friends during their times in the legion. Titus, Vibius and their comrades endure the harsh training regimen that made the legions the most feared military force in the ancient world. The 10th Legion is blooded in a series of actions in Spain, led by Caesar in a campaign that was the true beginning of one of the most brilliant military careers in history.

Three years after joining the legions, the 10th is called on again, this time to be part of the subjugation of Gaul, one of the greatest feats of arms in any period of history. During the subsequent campaigns, the 10th cements its reputation as Caesar’s most favored and trusted legion, and is involved in most of the major actions during this period.

This first book of a completed trilogy closes with Caesar crossing the Rubicon, and the 10th preparing to march to war, this time against fellow Romans.

Orangeberry Book of the Day - A Stairway To Danger - Ben Woodard

Ben Woodard

1923. An eyeless body. A menacing stranger. And a tangled mystery.

If Clive Cussler and Lee Child wrote a teen book featuring a deadly gang, resourceful boys, and nonstop excitement it would be A STAIRWAY TO DANGER.

Fourteen-year-old Tom is learning farm life from his older cousin, Will, when they stumble on a deserted barge—or is it? The boys smell a mystery and snoop around, but what they find is bigger and more dangerous than anything they could have imagined.

A STAIRWAY TO DANGER is a fun, page-turning thriller with a dark side.

Orangeberry Book of the Day - Ethan Justice: Origins by Simon Jenner

He’s a new kind of hero. Join him for his very first adventure.

John Smith’s life is dull and uneventful. Despite a privileged upbringing and education, he is an underachiever of the highest calibre. When Smith wakes up with Savannah Jones, an escort provided by his best friend, Mark Bradshaw, his life is changed forever. Eager to pay Jones, to avoid her pimp breaking his legs, he confronts his friend for the money – but there is one small problem – Bradshaw is dead. But what was the murderer after?

Fisher has lost his job and wants payback. Bradshaw had the one weapon that could grant him the ultimate revenge but torture hadn’t loosened his tongue. Smith and Jones are dragged into Fisher’s grand plot to destroy the bureaucrats responsible for taking the one job where his lust for murder was an asset. No longer part of the elite SAS, Fisher’s licence to kill is revoked. With only vengeance and an unnatural lust for his sister on his mind, Fisher will relish the destruction of anyone that stands in his way.

Jones, an escort for less than a day, must pay her pimp a thousand pounds or be sold to an interested third party with highly unsavoury tastes. Jones needs Smith to pay the money and Smith needs Jones to… well he’s not quite sure, but he clearly likes having her around. Together, armed with nothing but their wits, they become the pawns of an anti-terrorist agency in a plan to capture Fisher before he exacts a revenge that will take thousands of innocent lives.

Can the underachiever become the hero, save the day and get the girl? Find out in this dark story of murder, deceit, lust and revenge. It’s a fun and wild ride into a disturbing world.

In a post-apocalyptic world, Eve has discovered power of more than one nature. In Honour and Privilege, Eve became heir to the throne. In Duty and Sacrifice, she explores and defines the power of the elite. The horror of this revelation could shake their society as much or more than a servant becoming monarch.

About the author

In 2009 Kimberly returned to writing beginning by expanding on the work of others, filling in scenes left out of books she enjoyed, elaborating back stories of lesser known characters, and in some cases, writing beyond the end of a book or series.

With these stories, she learned how to craft a novel of her own and finally saw the opportunity to explore ideas she had jotted down, not expecting to return to again. She also found she enjoyed the endeavour so much that the need to write and create filled her. Now she can’t imagine going a week without writing a short story or a chapter for a novel.

Kim and Allen still live in Edmonton with their daughter Delilah, born at the end of 2006.

Orangeberry Book Tours – Untimed by Andy Gavin

Orangeberry Book Tours – Untimed by Andy Gavin

Untimed is an action-packed time travel novel by Andy Gavin, author of The Darkening Dream and creator of Crash Bandicoot and Jak & Daxter.

Charlie’s the kind of boy that no one notices. Hell, his own mother can’t remember his name. So when a mysterious clockwork man tries to kill him in modern day Philadelphia, and they tumble through a hole into 1725 London, Charlie realizes even the laws of time don’t take him seriously. Still, this isn’t all bad. Who needs school when you can learn about history first hand, like from Ben Franklin himself. And there’s this girl… Yvaine… another time traveler. All good. Except for the rules: boys only travel into the past and girls only into the future. And the baggage: Yvaine’s got a baby boy and more than her share of ex-boyfriends. Still, even if they screw up history — like accidentally let the founding father be killed — they can just time travel and fix it, right? But the future they return to is nothing like Charlie remembers. To set things right, he and his scrappy new girlfriend will have to race across the centuries, battling murderous machines from the future, jealous lovers, reluctant parents, and time itself.

Untimed by Andy Gavin

UntimedUntimed by Andy Gavin
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

How realistic was the characterization? All were very realistic. I could imagine seeing these kids and what they went through.

How does the setting figure into the book? It was a well-written book. I could see it being made into a fantastic movie like the Pirates of the Caribbean.

What are some of the book's themes? They jumped from present, to the future and into the past. All were necessary to make this book a interesting read.

Did the book end the way you expected? Yes, it ended back where it started. With one exception, he brought Yvaine back with him.

Disclosure: I received a review copy of this book from the author.
