What genre of books do you adore?
I’m a bit eclectic when it comes to reading. I love traditional horror: creepy, bloody, chilling stories of haunted houses and things that go bump in the night. I also love dark creatures with a sexy strike, which is what Marcus is in City of the Fallen. And I love reading nonfiction too. Maybe not surprisingly, I have a love of books covering dark periods of history, like the Black Plague during the 14 to write a story about it – and I will, one day.
What book should everybody read at least once?
A book out of their comfort zone. If you’re a fan of romance, try a thriller. Or pick up a biography or a self-help book. I think many of us close ourselves up to new stuff and it’s a big mistake. There are so many wonderful books out there and sometimes the only way to discover them is to try something completely unexpected.
What do you hope your obituary will say about you?
Hopefully, that I lived fully and never let fear stopped me. That’s all you can hope for in life, really. Nobody can guarantee you success or happiness, but you can – and should – fight for your dreams.
Location and life experiences can really influence writing, tell us where you grew up and where you now live?
I’ve lived all over the world. I come from a family of immigrants and expats, so I think it’s in my blood. I am extremely lucky that I write (a mix of freelancing and books) full-time, so I can take my job with me anywhere I go. I’ve lived in South America and Vietnam. I also spent almost four years living in Siberia. I love snow and cold weather, so I don’t think any other place in the world is going to beat that for exciting. I’m currently living in Thailand. Next stop? I don’t know yet. I have three dogs that move with me from country to country, so I have some limitations regarding where I can go next (I refuse to put them in quarantine). I’m desperately missing snow and cold weather, though, so I’ll probably be heading to northern Europe next. But not for at least another year.
Where do you get your inspiration from?
Inspiration is really weird: it comes from the most unexpected places. Sometimes a movie or a book sparks an idea. Sometimes I dream part of a story or a character and then find a way to expand on that.
Do you plan to publish more books?
I actually have a list of ideas waiting to be developed. Well, two lists. One with topics for nonfiction books and one for novels and novellas. Even if I write four or five books a year, it’s still going to take me at least a decade to get through the list.
What else do you do to make money, other than write?
It is rare today for writers to be full time…
I’m one of the lucky ones who writes full-time. My “day job” is freelance writing. I write for everybody from Popular Mechanics to Yahoo! to the Discovery Health website. I absolutely adore my job, maybe because I’m a nerd at heart and this gives me a chance to spend time researching fascinating stuff and getting paid for it.
Five years ago, vampires came out of hiding and took over the world. It was meant to be a quick enslavement but it turned into a bloody battle that brought humanity to the brink of extinction.
Isabelle Bryant is one of the “lucky” survivors, now living in hiding, scavenging for food through deserted towns.
And she’s tired of it.
So she’s devised a plan: find the king of the vampires and drive a stake through his heart.
Except that wickedly sensual king Marcus is nothing like the monster she expected. And while landing on his bed was part of the plan all along, discovering that he might hold the key to humanity’s survival certainly wasn’t. The catch? Saving humanity also means ensuring vampire survival. It means giving up hope for a return to a human-ruled world.
As sparks fly and hate becomes heat, Isabelle must pick a side — before the darkness devours them all.
