Author Interview – Vicky Savage

Can you share a little about your work with us? To date I’ve written and published TRANSCENDER: First-Timer and STREAMING STARS, Books 1 and 2 of the Transcender Trilogy. Currently, I’m finishing up my initial draft of Book 3, ILLUMINOSITY, which I expect to release in late 2013. The books cross several genres and can most accurately be described as Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Paranormal Romance. My MC, Jaden Beckett, is a Connecticut teenager who is still recovering from the sudden death of her mother, when she discovers she possesses an amazing gift—the ability to travel to parallel worlds.

How did you come up with the idea for this trilogy? I’ve always loved stories that take place in medieval times, with swords and horses and knights in shining armor. I had two problems, though. The first was that I didn’t want my protagonist to be a helpless damsel in distress. Rather, I wanted to her be strong, athletic, courageous, and a completely modern girl. The second was that I didn’t want all the messiness that goes along with having no electricity or indoor plumbing. So I created an alternate world that combined all the fun medieval stuff with nice bathrooms and great clothes. Then I ruthlessly plucked my unsuspecting protagonist from her quiet Connecticut life and dropped her right in the middle of it.

Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp? No. I want my readers to be entertained—to laugh and cry along with my characters. I hope there are a number of thought-provoking themes in my book, but if all readers get out of it is a few hours of blissful escape, that’s reward enough for me.

Who designed your covers? My dear friend, Carrie Drazek, actor, writer, producer, agreed to design my covers for me. We have a great working relationship and were able to come up with cover designs that we both love.

Have you met any people in the industry who have really helped you? Yes. Although when I first started writing, I knew no one in the industry. I joined my local writers association, but soon discovered it was populated mostly with “dabblers.” It did offer a great seminar on self-publishing, though, which I took and which was responsible for launching my career. Early on, a newbie blogger received one of my books in a giveaway and wrote an amazing review. I thanked her, and we struck up an internet friendship. I’m thrilled to say that her blog skyrocketed in popularity in a very short period of time, and she steadfastly supported me and my books every step of the way. Also, through this remarkable lady, I’ve met several other authors, both indie and traditionally published. These relationships have likewise been invaluable. The blogger’s name is Dr. Christina Hickey and her blog Ensconced in YA is one of the best out there. I’ll never be able to thank her enough!

Transcender First-Timer

Jaden Beckett, typical Connecticut teenager possesses an awesome power she isn't even aware of until it's triggered by a freak electrical storm and she's catapulted into a strange parallel version of earth and an amazing alternate existence. The destiny police want her out. She's got other plans!

In this life she's a princess and heir to the throne of one of the three surviving dome nations. She has her mother back, a miracle she never imagined possible. And, just as compelling, is her breathless romance with Ryder Blackthorn, a wanted outlaw and possibly her one true soul mate.
