Author Interview – Sonja Hegman

*When did you first know you could be a writer?

When I received an A++ on a three-chapter novel I had to write in eighth grade. My teacher’s comment read something like, “I can’t wait to read your real-life novel one day.” That encouragement meant everything.

*What inspired you to write your first book?

I was walking around a bookstore looking for a book on the business of writing. Many books existed about the writing craft, but nothing about the business side or how to make money. That’s when I realized I had to write that book.

*What made you want to be a writer?

It was fun. When I started out I wrote fiction. I loved being able to create worlds and characters out of think air. It’s probably the only thing that kept me sane as a teenager.

*What do you consider the most challenging about writing a novel, or about writing in general?

Fear. It’s easy to get sucked into worrying about what people will think of your work. Sometimes it’s quite difficult to push those thoughts out.

*Did writing this book teach you anything and what was it?

Yes, that I knew nothing about the book business. I learned that writing the book is not the end of the journey, but only the beginning.

*What is your greatest strength as a writer?

Knowing that I’m a better editor than a writer.

Trials

Have you always dreamed of earning your living as a full time writer?

Sonja Hegman has made that dream work for her. Now she tells other writers and “virgin” business owners how to do it, too. In Trials of an Entrepreneurial Virgin Hegman explains how to:

• Choose a business structure
• Write a client contract
• Handle those “clients from hell”
• Develop your marketing materials
• And of course, the ins and outs of networking—both online and in-person

From working at a small town Minnesota newspaper to taking on The Big Apple and finally discovering her niche as a business writer and social media consultant, Hegman tells us about her triumphs and her trials—and offers us the “virgin writing professional’s” practical advice along the way.
