Meet the Author - Peter Cunningham

Have you included a lot of your life experiences, even friends, in the plot? All novelists pick and choose, cut and paste experiences and people from their lives. I’m no different.

How important do you think villains are in a story? As important as they are in life.

Do you have to travel much concerning your book(s)? I travelled extensively when researching my thrillers. Locations included Israel, France, New York, Japan and Australia. My current novels are all set in a part of Ireland that I know intimately.

Where do you see yourself in five years? Working on my next book, Insha’Allah.

Are you reading any interesting books at the moment? I tend to read history and non-fiction mostly. I’ve just finished Antony Beevor’s ‘The Second World War’, an epic book that is so long and heavy that the Kindle might have been invented to take the pain out it. I’ve also recently read ‘Last Ape Standing’ by Chip Walter, a book that throws a fascinating new light on human evolution.

Are there any new authors that have sparked your interest and why? Ned Beauman (‘The Teleportation Accident’) is hilarious. I also admire Laurent Binet who wrote the enigmatic ‘HHhH’.

What are some of the best tools available today for writers, especially those just starting out? Computers, which enable everyone to produce impeccable looking typescripts, have also led to nearly everyone believing that they have ‘a book in them’. This may be true, but what kind of book is another story. The best tools today are the same as they were in Shakespeare’s day: read widely, work hard and revise endlessly.

Do you have any advice for writers? Write every day. Keep at it. Learn your craft. Don’t be discouraged by rejection.

What dreams have been realized as a result of your writing? I’ve been lucky enough to spend most of my life working at something I enjoy.

If you could leave your readers with one bit of wisdom, what would you want it to be? I’d like them to be as honest with me as I hope I’ve been with them.
