How did you develop your plot and characters? I knew I wanted to write a romance about an almost 40 year old woman. I have read so many stories with 20 year old main characters and I wanted to do something different. When I created Heather in my head, everything else was pretty easy. I have a rockstar crush on Adam Levine and thought he would make the perfect male lead. So I took a widow and Adam and put them together. When I started talking about my Adam obsession, I realized that I was not alone and it’s been fun to talk about falling for a rockstar at this age.
Who is your publisher? My friend and I created our own publishing company, Perfect Mamas Press. It has been an amazing experience thus far. We intend to work with other authors and guide them through the process. We have several potential clients lined up and we are so excited about it!
Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp? My book focuses on different social media. It talks about the fact that we all live our lives in a sort of glass bowl now. People report our business online and our kids spend a lot of time with electronic devices. I think it has changed the way we parent and the way we live our lives. My book takes a humorous look at it but I think it reminds us to open our eyes and pay attention to what we are putting out there.
How much of the book is realistic? Tripped Up Love is very realistic. It takes place in a suburban middle class neighborhood. Moms all over will be able to identify with the plight of Heather even if they are not a single mom.
Have you included a lot of your life experiences, even friends, in the plot? After my friends have read my book they have said it feels like they spent a lot of time with me. They feel me in this book. I have taken what I know and what I have experienced and mixed it all up. If you know me well, you might recognize a few things in the book. But, it is fiction and just because something happened to the main character’s best friend doesn’t mean it happened to mine. That’s something people seem to forget!
Heather Meadows lost the only love she’s ever known. Her perfect, yet ordinary life was turned upside down the day her 38-year-old husband died. Her happily ever after was gone in the blink of an eye. Heather’s life becomes the subject of scrutiny and pity as she tries to pick up the pieces of her shattered world and raise her three children on her own. In the midst of suburbia and gossipy neighbors, Heather tries to re-build a normal life. Little does she know she’s about to trip into a new adventure. An adventure she could never have imagined. Where will her misstep take her and how will Heather handle the prying eyes of those around her?
